What is Mammosite?

Mammosite is an advanced radiation therapy used in breast cancer treatment that targets cancer cells limiting the exposure of healthy tissue to radiation. This form of treatment is typically only 5 days in duration as opposed to the usual 5-7 weeks. With mammosite there is little to no scarring, burning or discoloration of the surrounding skin and less fatigue than with traditional radiation therapies.

How is the procedure performed?

Your doctor will insert a balloon catheter inside the lumpectomy cavity through a small incision in your breast. When the catheter is in position it will be inflated with sterile saline and contrast solution. This is used to help the radiation oncologist locate the area of the balloon on x-ray. There will be a portion of the catheter that remains outside your breast in order to administer the treatment. This will be secured to a cushioned gauze pad to prevent movement.

Before treatment begins

Your specific treatment plan will be planned by your radiation oncologist once the catheter is in place. The first working day after your surgery is performed you will return to radiation oncology for a process called simulation. A CT scan will be performed as well as a series of x-rays. This is done in preparation for your treatment. The next working day treatment will begin. Typically there are two treatments daily, scheduled six hours apart for five days. Each visit will last approximately thirty minutes. You are not required to stay at the site in between treatments.

Treatment

For the treatment you will be in a specially designated treatment room. The catheter remaining outside your breast will be attached to a computer controlled brachytherapy treatment machine. This highly developed machine will insert a radiation seed through the catheter to deliver the therapy. No medical personnel will be in the room with you once treatment begins. You will be able to communicate with your doctors’ nurse and therapist through an intercom system. This portion of the treatment should be painless, and no radiation will remain in your breast in between treatments.

During Treatment

It is important for the catheter site to be kept dry. You also might find it helpful to wear a supportive bra during the time the catheter is attached for added support and protection. Physical activities should be limited during this time of treatment so as to prevent movement of the catheter. You should have minimal change in the appearance of the treated area.

After Treatment

Upon completion of your last session of treatment the catheter will be removed through the same incision it was inserted. Once it has been removed it will be covered with a bandage. You may experience some tenderness or bruising in this area, which is normal. It is recommended that you schedule a follow up appointment one month after your last treatment with your radiation oncologist. Your surgeon will also require a follow up appointment once the catheter has been removed.
