Aventura, Fla.  – As communities around the country recognize Prostate Cancer Awareness in September and Breast Cancer Awareness in October, Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center is pleased to announce the start of its affiliate membership in the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

“Aventura Hospital and Medical Center and the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center are committed to providing its patients with state-of-the-art care and access to the newest treatments available, and our affiliation with RTOG will magnify those opportunities,” said Heather Rohan, CEO of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center.  “We look forward to providing quality oncology care for our patients who deserve nothing short of the best.”

RTOG membership certifies that Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center has demonstrated compliance with the highest clinical standards of excellence and provides the center with access to the latest trials involving lifesaving therapies. This partnership will give patients greater access to oncologic clinical trials sanctioned by the American College of Radiology.

A national clinical cooperative group funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), RTOG is comprised of clinical and laboratory investigators from over 360 institutions across the United States and Canada. Since 1968, its mission to increase the survival and improve the quality of life of patients diagnosed with cancer has lead to a wide spectrum of research including brain tumors, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, cancers of the gastrointestinal system, bladder, prostate, sarcomas, cervical cancer and breast cancer.

“This new accreditation enhances our ability to provide better care to our patients by giving us access to cutting edge advancements in medicine,” reports Carlos Lopez, MD, medical director of the Cancer Center.   “We are grateful to add the opportunities offered by M.D. Anderson to our existing affiliation with the Sarah Cannon Research Institute, and we are excited to have the best resources available that can help us improve the quality of life for our patients.”

The Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI), an industry leader in clinical trials, is dedicated to advancing therapies for patients through clinical research. It is one of the largest, community-based research programs in the nation, conducting clinical trials in ten therapeutic areas through its affiliation with a network of hundreds of physicians. Additionally, it offers management, regulatory and other research support services to drug development sponsors and strategic investigator sites across the country.
